Our Granular Activated Charcoal (GAC) is designed for air purification, deodorization and vapor filter applications, but can be used in many water and liquid phase filtration applications and solvent recovery with good results. Made from selected grades of coconut shell, the superior level of hardness makes it cleaner than most other carbons and gives it longer life expectancy. This, combined with its high activity level, makes the GAC well suited for use in any kind of carbon filter or system.
Charcoal or Carbon was first known to treat water over 2000 years ago. However, Activated Charcoal was first produced commercially at the beginning of the 20th century and was only available in powder form. Initially Activated Charcoal was mainly used to decolorize sugar and then from 1930 for water treatment to remove taste and odor.
Granular Activated Charcoal was first developed as a consequence of WWI for gas masks and has been used subsequently for water treatment, solvent recovery and air purification. Activated Charcoal is full of holes. This unique network of connected pores inside the Charcoal gives it a very large surface area: 1 lb of Activated Charcoal typically provides a surface area of 125 acres. Activated Charcoal can be produced from a variety of carbonaceous raw material, the primary ones being coal, coconut shells, wood, bone and lignite. The intrinsic properties of the Activated Charcoal are dependent on the raw material source.
The Activated charcoal surface is non-polar which results in an affinity for non-polar adsorbates such as organics. Adsorption is a surface phenomenom in which an adsorbate is held onto the Charcoal surface. These forces are physical in nature, which means that the process is reversible (using heat, pressure, etc.). Activated Charcoal is also capable of chemisorption, whereby a chemical reaction occurs at the Charcoal interface, changing the state of the adsorbate (dechlorination is an example of a chemisorption process).
Activated Charcoal can carry 2,000 times its own weight in toxins, poisonous gases, and other chemicals. Charcoal's negative ionic charge attracts positive ionic charges (of toxins and poisons) causing them to bind, allowing the Charcoal to escort them out of the body via the eliminative channel of the intestines. This is the major reason why Activated Charcoal is used in Full Body Detox kits and regimens; making it the best COMPLETE herbal-based detoxification kit, regimen, and system available.
